OQUOSSOC – Rangeley’s outdoor sporting heritage will be on display at the 11th annual Outdoor Sporting Heritage Day, hosted by the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsman’s Association, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the clubhouse on Old Skiway Road.
Devotees of flyfishing will have many activities and displays related to their sport. Flycasting contests are scheduled for youth and adults. The main flycasting contest will begin at 1 p.m. and offer a cash prize. Some of the best flycasters in the region are expected to exhibit their skills.
Free flycasting lessons will be offered during the day. Demonstrations of flytying will be offered and custom made flyrods will be on display.
Also featured will be demonstrations and hands-on instruction in archery and shotgunning. Association archery director “Fletch” Dudley will demonstrate archery and bow hunting techniques.
The Rangeley Trap and Skeet Club will host a demonstration of trap and sporting clays at its nearby range. Qualified club members will provide hands-on instruction for youngsters in gun handling and safety.
The fur trade of the early 1800s will be recalled in a seminar and exhibit of muzzleloaders. MDM muzzleloaders will display black powder rifles and ammunition. Daniel Boone may make an appearance.
Other events will be a youth canoe race and a fishing contest held on the club’s stocked fish pond and a pond ecology education session.
The theme of the event will be continued at lunch with game meals on sale by the guides. Bison and elk burgers will be featured.
Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will have a display, and wardens and fisheries biologists will be on hand to answer questions. Maine outdoor artists such as Marsha Baker and David Tibbitts will display their works. Outdoor craftspeople producing baskets, canoe boxes, dry and wet flies, custom fishing nets and other specialty products will be in attendance.
