VALHALLA, N.Y. – Arthur E. Provancher, 89, of Armonk, N.Y., and formerly of Lewiston, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the Hebrew Hospital Home, where he had been a resident since September 2004.

He was born in Portland on Sept. 7, 1917, the son of Georges and Theodora Auger Provancher. After the death of his father in 1931, his mother moved the family to Auburn, where he attended Edward Little High School and first became involved with tennis, which became a lifelong interest.

In 1941, he went to work for the Philips Elmet Corporation, eventually becoming the foreman of the gold plating division, and retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy.

On May 17, 1947, he was married to the former Laurette Monier in Saints Peter and Paul Church. He continued to play tennis, and for several years coached tennis at St. Dominic High School, but the birth of his daughter Jeanne in 1948, gave him the chance to try out a new hobby: photography.

Besides taking the pictures, he developed, printed and enlarged all his photos. He also enjoyed playing duplicate bridge, playing in tournaments in Maine, Massachusetts and New York.

In 1983, he became a life master, and then gave bridge lessons and became a director of a bridge club in Auburn. In 1993, he and Laurette moved to New York in order to be closer to their daughter and grandson, and he continued playing tennis and bridge into his 80s.

Survivors include his wife of Armonk, N.Y.; a daughter, Jeanne, and husband, Camille Goulet, of Armonk, N.Y.; two sisters, Ellen Geahigan of Unionville, Conn., and Theodora Rocheleau of Westwood, Mass.; and a grandson, Philippe Goulet of Armonk, N.Y.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Alfred.
