AVON – The cause of a fire that destroyed two mobile homes located about 2 feet apart on Hare Street early Wednesday remained undetermined Thursday, Phillips fire Chief James Gould said.

State fire investigators were called to the scene to help determine what sparked the blaze, he said.

Initially, firefighters thought someone was at home when the fire was reported by a neighbor at 1:30 a.m., Gould said.

The owner of both trailers was on the road with her job for the summer but there was a car in the yard, he said.

Nineteen firefighters from Phillips, Strong, Salem Township and New Vineyard responded with six trucks to get the fire under control before a preliminary search of the trailers could be done, Gould said.

Franklin County dispatchers were able to make contact with a family member and determined that the woman’s son, Kenneth Ridlon, who lives in one of the trailers, had stopped at home and then gone with his sister to her home in another town in Franklin County, Gould said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, both trailers were fully engulfed.

The blaze is believed to have started in the back of the first trailer and spread to the second trailer, he said. Firefighters were able to prevent flames from reaching a camper about 10 feet from the fire and two car ports, he said.

Three state fire investigators, including Fire Marshal Sgt. Ken Grimes, investigated the scene, located off Avon Valley Road, which is off Route 4.

Gould said Thursday morning that he still didn’t know the owner’s name of if the trailers were insured.
