PORTLAND – During a thunderstorm at Mallison Falls, South Windham, this evening, Frank Elliott and his son Seth were struck by lightning – the bolt entering their home. Both are still unconscious, but the attending physician said that he has hopes of both recovering. Both were leaning chairs against the wall near an electric light switch. A woman in the room was severely shocked but soon got over the effects.

• Frog legs are in the Belfast market at 40 cents a pound. Several years ago, it is said the late J. Wakefield Waterman did a good business in this commodity, catching his frogs in Kirby Lake and Goose River and shipping them to New York.

WASHINGTON – President Eisenhower blasted the revamped Civil Rights Bill in an angry statement today, but the Senate pushed it to the point of passage. He said this was a blow to “our whole judicial system” and added: “It will also make largely ineffective the basic purpose of the bill – that of protecting promptly and effectively every American in his rights to vote.”

United Ambulance laid off several workers Monday and removed one ambulance from service due to a budgetary crunch, according to Robert Brayton, manager of UA. “I laid off the equivalent of six people … and we’re taking one ambulance off the road because UA service is caught up in an economic void,” Brayton said of the service owned by Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s General Hospital. “It’s merely a reflection of the times.”
