CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Public health officials say they have identified the season’s first mosquito pool infected with Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

A mosquito pool in Newton tested positive for the disease. The discovery is not surprising, after the disease was identified in the state in the last three years.

In 2005, seven people were diagnosed with the illness. Two people died.

Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen said the discovery means residents and visitors should do all they can to avoid being bitten by mosquitos. He recommends using insect repellant; wearing long sleeves and pants while outside, especially at dusk and dawn; and removing standing water on their property.

As of the end of July, the state has tested nearly 4,300 mosquito pools.
