LEEDS – A 12-year-old boy was critically injured Friday when the ATV he was riding with a family member flipped near Plains Road, officials said.

The boy was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what were believed to be severe neck injuries.

Rescue crews attempted to restore the boy’s breathing and pulse as they rode to the Lewiston hospital in an ambulance.

Maine Game Warden Rick Stone, who was leading the investigation, did not return phone calls with further details about the crash.

The victim’s identity was not immediately available.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department officials also went to the scene after it was reported about 6 p.m. Investigators from that agency said the boy was hurt when the ATV flipped over roughly 100 yards in the woods off Plains Road.

What led to the crash was not immediately clear. One neighbor told police the boy had been riding the vehicle with his uncle on the back. That witness said the 12-year-old was wearing a helmet as he rode into the woods, according to Sheriff Guy Desjardins.

The uncle, also not identified, escaped the crash without serious injury. Police arrested him on a warrant for unpaid fines but also took him to the hospital to be examined for pain Desjardins said.

Hours after the crash, after dark, police and wardens remained at the scene, photographing the crash site and interviewing potential witnesses.

Maine State Police and medics from Turner Rescue also went to Plains Road when the crash was reported.

The victim’s condition could not be determined late Friday night. His injuries were described by police as critical.
