PITTSBURGH – Ken Griffey Jr. hit one of four Reds’ home runs and Cincinnati had a season-high 19 hits in a 13-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night to halt a five-game losing streak.
Former Pirates farmhand Jeff Keppinger keyed a four-run first inning with a double and drove in three runs.
Scott Hatteberg and Griffey hit line-drive home runs into the right-field seats a batter apart in the seventh inning and Adam Dunn homered for the second game in a row to support Matt Belisle’s first winning start in more than two months. Alex Gonzalez added a solo shot in the ninth.
Rockies 9, Braves 2
ATLANTA – Garrett Atkins hit a three-run home run to back Jeff Francis and the Colorado Rockies beat the Atlanta Braves 9-2 on Friday night.
Francis (12-5) allowed a run and six hits in six innings. The left-hander, who has won seven straight decisions, didn’t walk any and struck out eight. He’s 7-0 in his last 10 starts and 11-1 in his last 17 starts.
Kazuo Matsui went 3-for-5 and scored three runs for the Rockies.
Brewers 2, Phillies 1
MILWAUKEE – Yovani Gallardo and the Milwaukee Brewers concentrated on taking on the Philadelphia Phillies, not each other.
Gallardo won his third straight decision, retiring 14 straight batters in one stretch to lead the Brewers over the Phillies 2-1.
Milwaukee moved back into the NL Central lead, one game over the second-place Cubs. The Brewers had been in first place since April 21 before falling one percentage point back of Chicago on Wednesday.
Mets 6, Cubs 2
CHICAGO – Carlos Delgado hit a go-ahead double off Ryan Dempster in a four-run ninth inning, and the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 Friday to extend their winning streak to three.
Delgado’s double off Dempster (2-4) followed a leadoff walk to David Wright as the Mets (62-47) moved 15 games over .500 for the first time since early June. Delgado scored on Shawn Green’s two-out double inside the third-base line for a 4-2 lead.
Green came in on an RBI single by Ruben Gotay, pinch-hitter Moises Alou singled and Jose Reyes got the Mets’ fifth hit of the inning, another run-scoring single that led to boos among the 41,512 fans at Wrigley Field.
Nationals 3, Cardinals 2
WASHINGTON – Ryan Zimmerman’s ninth-inning single gave the Washington Nationals their fourth straight win, 3-2 over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.
Pinch-hitter Tony Batista, Washington’s last available position player, led off the inning with a single off Ryan Franklin (4-1). Felipe Lopez hit into a force play before Ronnie Belliard singled. Zimmerman then lined a 1-1 pitch to left field, scoring Lopez from second.
Chad Cordero (2-2), the fourth Nationals pitcher of the game, threw a scoreless ninth to earn the win.
It is Washington’s first four-game winning streak since May 22-25.
Astros 8, Marlins 2
MIAMI – Houston’s Roy Oswalt and a brief rain storm were too much for Dontrelle Willis to overcome Friday night.
The left-hander lost his eighth straight decision as Oswalt shut down the Florida Marlins in the Astros’ 8-2 victory.
Willis (7-11), on the longest losing streak of his major league career, hasn’t won since May 29 at the Chicago Cubs, a span of 12 starts.
He pitched 6 1-3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits.
Oswalt (11-6) allowed a run and four hits over six innings with five strikeouts. He has a four-game winning streak since July 20.
