CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will host the German-based traditional Irish band Cara on its first U.S. tour at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center. A preshow Irish session will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Cara is rooted in Irish and Scottish traditional music, but with ambitions to create its own unique sound. Making up the band are Sandra Gunkel, vocals, piano, flute; Gudrun Walther, vocals, fiddle, viola; Claus Steinort, flutes, whistles, concertina; and Jürgen Treyz, guitars. They have each make names for themselves as respected musicians. Bodhrán player Rolf Wagels sometimes joins them as a special guest.
Besides its music, Cara is known for the charming and witty performances of the two front women, who sing songs and tell tales of jealous lovers, daring young women, water-spirits and other curiosities – and play rousing jigs and reels.
Skye Theatre is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and U.S. Route 2. Tickets are $10 at the door. Call 562-4445 for reservations. For more information, log on to www.necelticarts.com.
