DIXFIELD – Music, crafts, a flower show, food and lots of other events are scheduled for the annual Dixfield Main Street Outdoor Market on Sunday, Aug. 19.
A couple of the major events start the day before, when local flower enthusiasts enter their bouquets in the fifth annual Festival of Flowers from noon until 3 p.m. at the historical society building on Main Street.
Participants may enter classes ranging from a single flower in a vase to bouquets of cut flowers.
The exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Al or Esther Larsen at 562-7332. Also on Saturday will be the second annual Dixfield version of the “Antiques Road Show” at the historical society building.
Historical society member Bill de Vries said Smithfield antique auctioneer and appraiser Tim Gould will evaluate items. A charge of $5 for one item, or three for $10, will go to the historical society.
On Sunday, Main Street from the American Legion to Old Chapel Antiques will be lined with dozens of vendors offering everything from crafts, flea market items, toys and food to handmade baskets, knits and maple syrup.
This year, people will have a chance to dunk their police officers under a program organized by officer Eric Bernier.
Proceeds from the police dunk will go toward the Dixfield Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
Norine Clarke, a longtime organizer of the Outdoor Market, said most of the food will be set up in booths around the post office and on Main Street.
The King Hiram Masonic Lodge chicken barbecue is the only exception. It will be served at noon.
Other food offered by vendors includes fried clams, hot dogs, lobster rolls and fried dough. The Dixfield Firemen’s Auxiliary will start serving coffee and doughnuts at 6 a.m. in front of the fire station.
Among the musical performances is one by singer Sammie Angel, who will perform at 3 p.m. at the gazebo.
Other events include nickel bingo all day at the American Legion hall, a book sale at the library, and one-kilometer and five-kilometer foot races. To register or for more information on the races, phone Paul Jones at 562-7172.
The annual event will take place rain or shine. This is at least the 10th year of the downtown festival.
