LEWISTON – The folk quartet Wake the Neighbors will provide the music for an evening of traditional New England contra dancing Friday, Aug. 10, in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library.

Making up the group are Jessie Gagne-Hall on fiddle, John Cote on guitar, Alfred Lund on percussion, and Anthony Shostak on banjo, Irish small pipes and didgeridoo. Together, they perform an eclectic mix of Celtic, Quebecois and Cape Breton dance tunes they describe as “high-octane music for the new millennium.” To add an extra dose of energy to the event, they have invited a trio of local teen fiddlers – Rebecca Grube, Matt Lamare and Hannah Rodrigue – to join them on a few numbers.

The dance will run from 8 to 11 p.m. Admission is $5, $2 for students. The caller will be John McIntire, known for designing programs that engage everyone from first-timers to those with many years of dancing experience. He typically throws a square dance or two in with the contra sets. People are encouraged to attend either with or without partners.

The Aug. 10 event wraps up LPL’s summer contra dance series, supported by the Lewiston PAL.

Callahan Hall is on the third floor of the library at 200 Lisbon St. For more information, call 784-0135, ext. 200.
