FARMINGTON – Elspet G. Johnson, 99, Boston Post Cane holder of Wilton, died Saturday, Aug. 4, at Orchard Park Living Center.

She was born Feb. 14, 1908, a daughter of John and Frances (Clark) Grant and received her education in Wilton schools and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1925.

She continued her education in a private hospital in Philadelphia and worked as a nurse at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Farmington when it opened in 1929. She later worked as a nurse at the Wilton Woolen Mill until it closed and then worked as the company nurse at G.H. Bass in Wilton until her retirement in 1974. She remained active in the health care setting by being an active member of the Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she contributed more than 3,000 hours of service as a volunteer.

On Sept. 1, 1934, she married Sam Johnson at the family home on School Street in Wilton. He died June 25, 1985.

She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Wilton, where she was the oldest member of the congregation. She enjoyed reading and playing cards and Scrabble with her cousin, Hazel Dummer and was known for knitting mittens annually for Operation Santa Claus.

She is survived by a son, David Johnson of Wilton; a daughter, Joyce Harris, and her husband, Frank, of Wilton; four grandchildren, Jeff, Jamie, Pam and Mike; and nine great-grandchildren, Zach, Taylor, Chad, Hailey, Jarrett, David, Jessie, Michaela and Jacob.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Susie; and a sister, Alice, and her husband, Sam.
