MEBANE, N.C. – Merle Freeman Robinson Sr., 92, died Aug. 5, at his home after two years of declining health. His family was at his side. He was formerly of Winthrop.

His granddaughter, Cindy Daniels and grandson, Allen McNeely were indispensable in the care of their grandfather in his last months in his home.

He was the son of Freeman S. and Wilda Libby Robinson and was born in Auburn, Feb. 10, 1915. He was a graduate of Edward Little High School of Auburn in 1932.

He married Ella Wentzell on April 24, 1937. She preceded her husband in death in 1995. His beloved cat and companion George passed away the day before he died.

He was a Maine state trooper for 20 years, retiring as a lieutenant in 1962. He was also chief deputy sheriff of Kennebec County and chief of police for the town of Winthrop.

He was past worthy patron of Boynton Chapter 88 of OES of Monmouth, and had been a member more than 60 years. He was also past master Mason of the Masonic Lodge 110 of Monmouth and received his 50-year master Mason medal in 1993.

He is survived by three sons, David F. Robinson of Auburn, Arthur S. Robinson of Palm Springs, Calif., and Merle F. Robinson Jr. of Mebane, N.C.; one sister, Hester Perani of Santa Rosa, Calif.; five granddaughters, Kim, Amy, Penny, Mary and Cindy; three grandsons, Allen, Michael and Dennis; 17 great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
