WEST PARIS – The Central Maine Junior Geologist Club of Farmingdale will hold a Gem’Boree on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 to 19, at the Mollyockett Inn and Spa, Route 26.
There will be dealers with minerals from all over, tours of a local mine, gold panning demonstrations, games, activities and raffles. For more information, visit www.jr-rockhoppers.org or call Becky at 582-3261.
The rock and mineral club is open to children ages 5 to 18 and their families. The club offers a merit badge program on rocks and minerals and teaches about conservation and astronomy.
The club members take field trips and visit the dumps of Maine mines, finding such items as quartz crystals, tourmalines and aquamarines.
They pan for gold in rivers and streams and go geocaching, looking for hidden treasure placed out and about by other geocachers, using GPS coordinates to locate them. New for 2008 the club will take up metal detecting.
