BALLWIN, Mo. (AP) – A 15-year-old New York boy drowned in a river during a family outing on Sunday.
Isaiah Green was swimming in the Meramec River, where five children drowned during a picnic last summer, when he began slipping on the silty bottom, the Missouri State Water Patrol said. When he tried to remove his water shoes, he went under.
Six divers and a dog searched for 40 minutes before finding the Brooklyn boy’s body.
The river has a strong current and an irregular bottom littered with trash and debris and is considered unsafe for swimming or diving.
In July last year, four siblings and a fifth child, ages 10 to 17, drowned in the river during a church picnic. In May 2007, a man drowned after falling into a hole while wading in it.
