LEWISTON – Mayor Larry Gilbert becomes the latest to seek to get his name on November’s municipal ballot.
Gilbert officially took out nomination papers Thursday to run for a full two-year term as mayor. He was elected in January and is completing the term of former mayor Lionel Guay, who resigned last fall.
So far, 16 residents have signaled their intention to seek one of eight open seats on the City Council. Only three have handed in petitions, which guarantee a spot on the ballot. They include Joseph Roy, of 9 Venise Ave., seeking the Ward 2 City Council seat; Charles Soule, of 170 Bartlett St., seeking the Ward 5 seat; and Robert Reed, of 58 Albert Ave., seeking the Ward 7 seat.
At least four City Council incumbents have said they won’t run again. They include Ward 2’s Renee Bernier, Ward 3’s Lillian O’Brien, Ward 5’s Paul Samson and Ward 7’s Normand Rousseau.
Candidates were able to pick up petitions for the 16 open City Council, mayor and School Committee seats on July 9. Potential candidates for those seats have until Sept. 7 to submit them to the City Clerk’s Office.
Candidates for the mayor’s office must collect signatures from at least 100 registered Lewiston voters by the Sept. 7 deadline. Candidates for the City Council and seven School Committee seats must collect signatures from 50 registered voters from their ward. Candidates for the School Committee’s at-large position need signatures from 50 registered voters from anywhere in Lewiston.
