HARRISON – The bodies of a man and woman were found by divers Tuesday morning south of Bear Point in Long Lake near where their boat and another collided Saturday night.
Their names and the names of two people in the other boat who swam to safety have not been released by officials due to the ongoing criminal investigation and the possibility of charges being filed, Lt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service said.
However, friends of the dead boaters have identified them as 55-year-old Raye Trott of Naples and a woman from Norway who worked as a bartender at Bray’s Pub and Eatery in Naples.
Dorian said he informed 20 to 25 family members and friends of the victims of the discovery.
“They were pretty distraught, obviously,” he said. “They were just thankful that they had been located so they could put closure to it.”
The bodies were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta. Dorian said the cause of the deaths has not been determined.
Warden Chris Cloutier said the bodies were located 1,800 feet from shore and 1,200 feet from the spot where the bow of their 14-foot fiberglass motorboat was discovered floating on the east shore near the Naples town line Saturday night. The bodies were located 70 feet from each other in 40 to 45 feet of water and about in the center of the 11-mile-long lake.
Warden Rich Stone discovered the woman’s body near the stern of the boat shortly after 10 a.m. Bruce Loring found the man’s body at 11:45 a.m.
The boat’s motor was still attached to the stern, and will be removed for investigation. Dorian said the motor marked the spot where the collision most likely occurred.
A map prepared by the Warden Service identified three areas where debris had been found by divers. Items included a credit card belonging to the dead man.
Dorian said his department will look for more debris and may raise the stern from the lake bottom. Nine divers from the Warden Service and eight from the Maine State Police worked the scene Tuesday.
The pair who were killed were out on the lake Saturday to watch a meteor shower, according to David Hines, 55, of Naples, a close friend to Trott, and Michael Bray, owner of the restaurant.
About 9 p.m., the couple’s craft was cut in half by a 34-foot-long cigarette-style boat headed north near Bear Point, according to the Warden Service. The two people in the larger craft were thrown into the water, and the boat continued on to the shore near Bear Point Road and into the woods 134 feet, officials said. The cigarette boat occupants swam to shore and did not suffer major injury, Lt. Dorian said.
Dorian said officials are conducting a criminal investigation and the results will go to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s office for a decision on what, if any, charges will be filed against the cigarette boat’s occupants.
He was unable to say whether either boat had lights on, which is required by state law, or whether alcohol was a factor in the collision. He did say a blood test is required of boaters involved in accidents.
There was a sense of relief among friends and family of Trott that his body had been recovered, Hines said Tuesday night.
“We are just glad he’s out of the lake where we can do something with him and happy he’s going to the right place,” Hines said.
