Auburn – Robert Henry Brainerd, “Bob,” 71, of Auburn, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, at his home of 66 years surrounded by his family after a short term illness.
He was born in Lewiston on Feb. 5, 1936, a son to the late George and Mary Ellen Brainerd. He was a graduate in the Class of ’54 from Edward Little High School. He served two years in the U.S. Army. On July 16, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Ina Mae Pease. He was a loyal employee for 35 years at Maine Medical Center until he retired in 2002. He was a member of Ancient Brothers Masonic Lodge in Auburn.
He and his wife have been camping at Mac’s campground in Poland for several summers. Bob was known as a quiet, selfless person who could never do enough for anyone. He loved his pets and always offered his home to those pets who needed adoption. Woodworking was one of Bob’s passions.
Christmas was his favorite holiday, and this was evident year after year by handmade decorations he displayed at his home on Taylor Street. Another passion was his love for athletics and the outdoors, especially boating, four-wheeling and snowmobiling. He especially enjoyed working with children to introduce them to new experiences, and in the process created memories that will last in their hearts forever.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years; two children, Robert Brainerd Jr. and his wife, Jayne, of Lewiston, Belinda Brainerd of Miramar, Fla., and her two children, Kendra and Kelsey Menard. Other survivors include two brothers, George and his wife, Millie, of Auburn, Irving and his wife, June, of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
The family would like to express their thanks to all who have visited, prayed and cared for Bob during his final months. A special thanks to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, his relatives, friends and neighbors who selfishly gave up their time to help him with a variety of needs. He will be missed by all.
