Repairs were under way most of the morning Thursday at the scene of a train derailment at Main and Depot streets in Livermore Falls.

The town’s busiest intersection and several others were reopened to traffic around noon after new rails were put in place and repairs were made to pavement around the tracks.

Three engines slid off the rails Wednesday night, forcing the 95-car train to come to a stop in the center of town.

Railroad officials spent 15 hours making repairs until traffic began moving normally through the intersection.

“It looks good, but the crossing is a bit rough,” said 18-year-old Shawn Kelley, who witnessed the derailment and watched most of the repairs. “But that’s normal, I suppose.”

Officials said the Pan Am Railways train, roughly a mile long, was mostly empty and was headed to paper mills in Jay and Rumford to pick up products when it derailed.

Nobody was hurt.

Railway officials said worn tracks were the likely cause of the derailment.
