BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (AP) – Evidence of cockfighting turned up during a raid of a private home on Monday and police said they are seeking an arrest warrant for the home’s owner.

Police seized 14 roosters, 17 hens, metal spurs and other paraphernalia associated with illegal cockfighting.

Several of the roosters had their spurs surgically removed, police said. That is common in cockfighting. It allows participants to attach metal spurs to the birds to inflict more serious injuries during their bloody battles to the death.

Police also seized veterinary medicine and surgical tools, chicken feed, a club, records of birds and home videos of cock fights from the home.

The birds were taken to the Bloomfield animal shelter.
