BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sean Keane improved his record to 9-0 with a complete-game, four-hit performance as Brockton, Mass., eliminated Monmouth with a 6-1 victory in the Northeast Regional American Legion Tournament Saturday night. Earlier in the day Monmouth dropped a 13-10 slugfest at the hands of Warwick, R.I.

Keane fanned nine batters while walking three.

“He was the best pitcher we’ve seen this summer,” said Monmouth coach Chad Drouin, whose team finishes with a 28-3 record.

“He had great stuff and picked the corners of the plate.”

Brockton (29-6) scored single runs in each of the first three innings off starter Josh Jillson (5-2) and added a pair of runs in the fourth after loading the bases.

Catcher Jeff Puopolo drove in one run after being hit by a pitch, and Brian Maloney followed with an RBI single to right. Monmouth’s lone run came on an RBI double by shortstop Dave Ricker.

“With 23 runs in the first two games, our offense stayed intact,” said Drouin. “Our defense just wasn’t there.”

Garrett Stenhouse belted a home run and drove in six runs as Warwick, R.I., outslugged Monmouth in the first game of the day.

Stenhouse’s three-run shot in the top of the eighth inning gave Warwick (33-10) a 13-6 advantage. Monmouth rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth before Sean Holbrook was picked off first by Warwick catcher Anthony Dupree with the tying run on deck.

Tim Fitzpatrick earned the victory despite being touched up for all 10 runs. Peter Mastors helped out offensively with a pair of hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Monmouth was led by Ricker who had a double among his two hits while driving in three runs. His fifth-inning double down the right-field line plated two runs. Mike Eaton added two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Justin Denbow (6-1) struggled with his control, walking five batters over four-plus innings. Only three of the seven runs off him were earned. Chris Ellis relieved Denbow, but fared no better as Warwick pounded him for nine hits and six runs in three and two-thirds innings pitched.
