AUBURN – Doris F. Smith, 87, of Bolster Heights, died peacefully on Sunday at the Hospice House where she was surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Feb. 21, 1920, in Jamaica Plain, Mass., the daughter of George and Alice (Gateley) Shoales. She attended Boston schools, where she learned to play the violin.
She worked at Jordan Marsh as a window dresser and gift wrapper and also at the Watertown Arsenal during the war, which is where she met Kenneth M. Smith. They were married on Aug. 25, 1947. From the 1960s until 1984, she managed a shoe store in Hanover, Mass.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Kenneth M. Smith of Bolster Heights; daughter, Joanne and her husband, Gerard E. Welch (her “little boy,” as she referred to him), of Lewiston; grandchildren, Joshua M. Welch of Durham and Jeannette L. Welch of Lisbon Falls; great-grandchildren, Brianna Welch and Aleisha Welch.
She was predeceased by her older sister, Alice M. Shoales, who died in October 1999; and her younger sister, Marion Tausevich, who died in July 1975.
Doris’s family would like to thank Bolster Heights for their great care and also the Hospice House for the excellent care she received in her final days.
