AUBURN – Gertrude S. Osgood, 98, of 440 Minot Ave., Auburn, died Sunday Aug. 19, at Clover Health Care Facility, where she had been a resident for the past three-and-a-half years.

She was born in Milton, Mass., on May 7, 1909, the daughter of Russell and Ella (Griggs) Swift. She graduated from Milton High School in 1927, then graduated from Perry Kindergarten Normal School in Boston in 1930 and from the University of Maine in 1962.

She moved to Auburn in 1930 to commence a 39-year career as a kindergarten teacher in the Auburn school system, at Lake Street and Washburn Schools.

She married George V. Osgood on April 9, 1932, and he died in 1959.

Gertrude was a member of the High Street Congregational Church, Woman’s Literary Union, CMMC Women’s Hospital Association, Maine Education Association and Androscoggin County Teachers Association.

She is survived by one son, Richard S. Osgood and his wife, Sandra, of Auburn; one daughter, Meredith O. Walker and her husband, Stanley, of Fairport, N.Y.; one sister, Esther Baker of Osterville, Mass.; five grandchildren, Rick Osgood of Lewiston, Scott Walker of New York, Andrew Walker of Hollis, Jim Walker of Massachusetts and Kristin O. Piper of Minot; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Swift and Marjorie Blondell; and by one brother, Russell Swift Jr.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Clover Manor Health Care Facility and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their excellent care over the past three years.
