Lewiston – Ruby, our dear “Nana,” 94, of Litchfield, passed away Sunday, Aug 19, at Marshwood Nursing Home, with her family at her side.

She was born in West Gardiner on March 16, 1913, the daughter of Harry and Alice (Brackett) Hinkley.

She married Charles Doyle MacWhinnie in West Gardiner on Aug. 29, 1934.

Ruby and Doyle moved from Litchfield to Rockland in 1965 and remained there until his death.

Ruby worked as a personal caregiver for many years following her husband’s death. She worked in Rockland, Litchfield, Monmouth and Bowdoinham, finally retiring at age 89 to live with her daughter, Esther, and “Red.” “Nana” is fondly remembered as loving and caregiving to all who knew her.

Ruby was a life member of Mystic Chapter 69 O.E.S in Litchfield.

Ruby and Doyle had six children, of whom two survive, Esther (Roscoe) Slattery and Roger (Betty) MacWhinnie, both of Litchfield. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Brian Slattery of Hampton, N.H., Kevin Slattery of Rochester, N.H., and his sons, Jason and Justin, Shawn Slattery of Nottingham, N.H., and his sons, Brendan and Connor, Elley (Mark) Merrifield and their daughter, Ariana, of Litchfield, and Kelley MacWhinnie and daughter, Shantal, and son, Michael, of Lisbon Falls, also a son-in-law, George Gousse, of Manchester.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1977; and four of their children, David in 1935, Russell in 1944, Charles Jr. in 1957, and Charlene Gousse in 1999; brothers, Harold, Clifford and Perley Hinkley; and sisters, Edith Eaton, Thelma Furlong, Esther Smith and Ruth Norton.
