SUGAR HILL, N.H. (AP) – A North Country woman had a close call hours after celebrating her 90th birthday with family and friends.
Sophie Fedorowicz, owner of North Country Cottages in Sugar Hill, escaped a fire in her home early on Sunday morning. She had smelled a faint odor of smoke when she went to bed at midnight, after wrapping up the party.
She shot out of bed when the smoke alarm woke her.
“It doesn’t take long for your guardian angel to tell you it’s the smoke alarm going off,” she said. “Everyone says I celebrated my birthday with a bang.”
Fedorowicz said she tried to call 911 but the phone didn’t work. She than ran out to her daughter’s cabin, barefoot and without her cane.
Sugar Hill Fire Chief Allan Clark says it appears the fire was started by an electrical problem.
Fedorowicz has moved into another cottage on the nine-acre property. None of the other cabins were damaged by fire, and Fedorowicz says she will honor reservations made for the rest of the summer.
She and her late husband bought North Country Cottages in 1948.
