Dear Sun Spots: We, the African Immigrants Association, are desperately in need volunteers to help with the organization, set up and clean up for the L/A Africana Festival taking place Sept. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Festival Plaza next to Gritty’s.
Between now and the event, we could use assistance with donor follow-up calls and advertisement sales.
On the day of the festival, Sept. 1, we would welcome assistance for an hour, or for several hours, on any and all of the following tasks: Vendor monitoring from 3 to 7 p.m.; Children’s amusement tent from 4 to 7 p.m.; parking monitoring from 3 to 5 p.m.; merchandise sales from 3 to 7 p.m.; bucket brigade for donations from 4 to 7 p.m.; set-up from noon to 4 p.m.; and break-down from 7 to 9 p.m.
When contacting the African Immigrants Association, please provide your name, address, email address, contact phone number, indicate whether you have a vehicle for transportation and which particular assignment and time frame you are most interested in and include a preferred T-shirt size.
To volunteer, call Bruno Yomoah at 240-4832, email him at [email protected]. Please include “volunteer” in the subject line. Alternatively, you can post your information to AIA, 12 Bates St., Suite B, Lewiston, ME 04240.
We are looking forward to eager volunteers and a huge community turnout at Festival Plaza, Saturday, Sept. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Attendance and parking are free. There will be mouth-watering African foods, sizzling live African music and dance, a dazzling African fashion show and lots of fun for children. Come join your neighbors and community for this fun event. – Elizabeth Eames, Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: Can you please rush this in before the corn season is over?
Is there anyone in the area that sells the old-fashioned yellow corn that was raised in the ’40s for the corn factories? It was big and meaty, and the yellow kernels were so good.
Thanks so much for your help. I can be reached at 225-3865. – Elvera Pardi, Turner.
Dear Sun Spots: Regarding your recent answer to No Name, in Auburn who was seeking the lyrics to Cecelia: My notes from years ago show there are two Cecelia songs. The first one was written by Herman Ruby and Dave Dreyer, copyrighted in 1925 and again in 1940.
The second one, which you provided to your writer, was penned by Paul Simon and possibly the others you mentioned.
I am assuming the person requesting the lyrics wanted the current version.
However, in case there is anyone interested, I am including the lyrics to the original Cecelia song. – No Name, No Town:
Little Miss Cecelia Green
Little Over Sweet Sixteen
But The Cutest Flapper
That You’ve Ever Seen
When The Fellows Pass Her By
She Will Always Wink Her Eye
When She Talks To Them
When She Walks With Them
This Is What They All Cry:
Does Your Mother Know You’re Out Cecelia?
Does She Know That I’m About To Steal Ya?
Oh My, When I Look In Your Eyes
Something Tells Me
You And I Could Get Together
How About A Little Kiss, Cecelia?
Why, do we two, keep on wasting time,
Oh, Cecelia, say that you’ll be mine.
Many Funny Things Occur
While the Boys Are Courting Her
I Refer To One Case In Particular
She Went With A Boy Named Joe
Who Was Always Lisping So
When He’d Ask This Miss For A Little Kiss
It Would Sound Like This:
Doeth You Mother Know You’re Out,
The-Theil-Yuh?
Doeth Thee Know That I’m About To
Thteal Yuh?
Oh, my, When I Look In Your Eyes
I Feel Very, You Know The Un-Neth-The-Thary
How About A Little Kith, The-Thiel-Yuh?
Juth A Kith You’ll Never Mith, The Thiel Yuh
Why Do We Two keep on wasting time
Oh The-Thiel-Yuh that that you’ll be mine.
