GREENWOOD – Residents will have to voluntarily maintain the town beach after voters failed to raise $1,000 for it this week.

“It means there’s no money to mow the lawn and the Porta Potti and trash can will be taken out,” Deputy Town Clerk Angela Lovejoy said of the 38-30 vote Tuesday night.

Approximately 70 of the town’s 500 registered voters attended the meeting, turning down every money article before them.

“They don’t want their taxes to go up,” Selectman Loretta Mikols said Wednesday of residents’ clear message.

Besides turning down a request to pay for upkeep of the town beach on South Pond off Greenwood Road, voters refused to raise $1,000 to maintain Dunham Park on Howe Hill Road and $2,000 to maintain Greenwood Shores picnic area beside North Pond on Route 26.

Earlier this year, the state notified Greenwood that the picnic area would be closed unless the town wanted to maintain it. Lovejoy said the state will now put boulders across the entry. A sign already states the area is closed.

Selectmen had asked money be appropriated for all three sites.

In other action, voters rejected a $75,000 request to buy a 1992 command rescue equipment truck for the Fire Department by a vote of 44-30. The acquisition was recommended by selectmen and Capital Improvement Committee. The department uses a 1982 school bus purchased from SAD 44 now. Voters previously rejected a request to buy a new rescue truck for $225,000.

Voters also overwhelmingly rejected a request to vote by ballot on a property tax levy limit of $513,043. The tally was 48-19.

Littering and appeals ordinances passed.
