AUBURN – Barring write-in campaigns, six of the seven open seats on the City Council in this November’s ballot will be settled without a fight.
City Council incumbents Robert Hayes of Ward 2, Bruce Bickford of Ward 4 and Ray Berube of Ward 5 will go on November’s ballot unchallenged. Incumbent Councilor Bob Mennealy and Ron Potvin will each claim one of two open at-large spots on November’s ballot.
And newcomer Michael Farrell of 169 Beaver Road will be unchallenged to claim the Ward 1 City Council seat being vacated by Dick Gleason.
But mayoral candidate Fred Sanborn of 143 Mill St. promised to provide plenty of drama.
“The big thing here is change, and that’s why I’m running,” Sanborn said Thursday. “We didn’t get enough of it.”
Sanborn faces Eric Samson for the mayor’s chair. Samson will finish his fifth year as the city’s Ward 3 council representative this year. The seat he’s vacating is the only other contested race on Auburn’s ballot. Former City Councilor Joseph DeFilipp will face Dan Herrick of 470 Hatch Road for it. Both have the distinction of having lost to Samson for the Ward 3 spot: Samson unseated DeFilipp narrowly in 2004 to win the seat and defeated Herrick in 2006 to keep it.
Every seat on the Auburn School Committee was settled before the ballot as well, with just enough candidates turning in nominating to petitions to fill the job.
Incumbent David Das and Francois Bussierre will claim the two at-large seats and incumbents Lane Feldman and Bonnie Hayes will reclaim their Ward 1 and Ward 2 spots.
Thomas Kendall of 221 Stevens Mill Road claims the Ward 3 spot, Jason Pawlina of 2 Bellflower Drive claims the Ward 4 spot and Lawrence Pelletier of 129 Second St. claims the Ward 5 spot.
