Turner – Doris E. Butcher, 77, of White Birch Drive, Turner, died peacefully Tuesday evening, Aug. 22, at her home, surrounded by her family and loved ones, following a long illness.

She was born in Lewiston, Sept. 27, 1929, a daughter of Arthur and Eunice (Houghton) Pearl. She was educated in local schools, graduated from Leavitt Institute, June 12, 1947, with study in home economics.

Following high school, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in home economics from Nasson College, May in 1951.

While at college, she was active in field hockey, deck tennis, badminton, basketball and bowling, as well as a member of the home economic club and executive committee.

While growing up, she contracted polio, which affected both of her arms, but she learned to deal with this and never let it become a disability for her.

She attended the Pine Tree Camp for Adults and Children with Disabilities, in Maine, shortly after treatment for her polio. She never allowed the polio she had as a child to prevent her from doing anything. She first worked in the dietician department at a Lewiston hospital after graduating college.

After marriage in 1955, she continued as a homemaker with four children. She then reentered the workforce at Prospect Hill Golf Course, then went on to Bradlees Department Store until her retirement. She then continued to work in her retirement on a part-time basis at the Turner Paris Farmers’ Hardware Store.

She was an avid gardener with a great green thumb and was an excellent cook, as she enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. She enjoyed playing golf, and in her later years, enjoyed watching it daily if she could.

She was a loyal and die-hard Red Sox fan, and family gatherings, especially cookouts, were a joy for her.

She leaves her four children, Kenny Butcher of Turner, Anita Lane and husband, David, of Turner, Dwain Butcher and wife, Kathy, of Monmouth, and Art Butcher and wife, Sue, of Auburn; 10 grandchildren, Ken, Hope and Eric Lane, and Kendra, Kelsey, Kayla, Kristen, Kacie, Amy and Jenny Butcher; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Spencer; two brothers, Erwin Pearl and wife, Donna, of Rome, and Leslie Pearl and wife, Lorraine, of Turner; and a sister, Nancy Youland and husband, David, also of Turner.

She was predeceased by a brother, Bubs Pearl of Turner.
