CORINNA (AP) – Jerome Emerson, whose service in the Maine Legislature coincided with the administrations of four governors, has died at the age of 91.

Emerson, a Republican from Corinna who served 15 years between 1952 and 1992 in the House and Senate, died Tuesday at his home. A retired poultry farmer, Emerson served on several local boards and in 1978 spent the summer as an agriculture missionary in Monrovia, Liberia.

Emerson served on the Maine Farm Bureau Board and the American Farm Bureau Federation. U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe said he “represented the very best in civic and public affairs in our state and was a longstanding leader in Maine’s agricultural community.”

A celebration of Emerson’s life is scheduled for Sept. 1.
