• One of the most notable events in the history of the Maine bar will take place this week at Portland beginning today and lasting until Wednesday night – the 30th annual meeting of the American Bar Association.

• Have you seen the ruins of the Old Orchard fire complete in one sweep of the eye? Take the excursion to Old Orchard next Sunday afternoon on the Harpswell steamboat Machigonne if you want to feel the mystery of the overturned lamp. This ocean view will be doubly appreciated by those who have gone on former sails offered by the Harpswell line. The steamer Machigonne will leave Portland pier Sunday at 2.30 p.m. with the American Cadet band aboard. Are you going?

50 years ago, 1957

Young Men, City of Portland, Maine, needs Police Patrolmen. Six immediate vacancies. Five vacancies during 1958. Must be U.S. Citizen – 21 to 25 years of age – or W.W. II or Korean Veteran under 29 – have high school education or equivalent – be physically fit – establish residence in Portland within one year.

Pay: $61.50 to $74.00 a week. 44-hour week. Two weeks paid vacation. Nine paid holidays. Sick leave. Contributory retirement system provides one-half pay pension at age 55. Optional low cost group life insurance with double accidental indemnity.

The Portland Police Department has a mobile radio equipped force of 116 and stresses modern police methods and organization.

25 years ago, 1982

• A 1982 Volvo, Lisbon’s newest police cruiser, outfitted with modern radio equipment and a new blue light, is becoming a familiar sight around town. The cruiser was purchased through bids earlier this year at a cost of $11,400.

• Approximately 20 employees of King’s Department Store in Auburn can breathe a sigh of relief in the wake of 66 store closings by the financially troubled chain because they’re not one of them. The chain closed 50 stores throughout the country last fall, including a store located in Lewiston.
