Lewiston – Normand H. Gagnon, 76, of Lewiston, died Friday, Aug. 24, at his home after a long illness, with his family at his side.
Born in Lewiston in 1931, the son of the late Dominique and Ophilia (Thibodeau) Gagnon, he was raised in Lewiston and attended Lewiston Schools.
He worked for more than 45 years at Enterprise Foundry as a molder and pattern controller prior to his retirement. He married the former Adele Coulombe, Jan. 30, 1954, and lived in Auburn to raise three children until recently moving back to Lewiston. In 1950, he joined the Maine Army- National Guard and was activated to regular service in 1961, during the Berlin Crisis. He retired from the military after 26 years of service.
He was an active member of the New Auburn and Sacred Heart Golden Age Club senior citizens, and of the Sacred Heart Church and choir. His passion was raising his children, and seeing that they enjoyed activities such as building a skating rink in the backyard during the winter months and having the neighborhood children join in the fun, or teaching his kids and grandchildren math by playing games of cribbage. In his younger days he enjoyed going golfing with his best friend, Albert Landry, or family members. He enjoyed bowling, and belonged to the men’s Industrial Bowling League, for Reed Paper, and the Will Riders Senior Bowling League. He took part as beano caller for the seniors at St. Louis Church.
He will always be remembered for his wonderful smile and talented voice that could be heard around the neighborhood during the summer months when he thought no one was listening. He also sang at family weddings and for friends.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Adele; a daughter Vicky Black and companion, Lester Bonzey; son Michael and daughter-in-law, Annette; daughter Monique Gagnon and companion, Jerry Dunn; five grandchildren, Nia and her husband Mike King, Joshua Black, Renee, Andrew, Emily Gagnon; great-grandchild Sean Gagnon; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.
He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.
A special thank you to the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice Service, and Dr. Roger Austin for attending to his care.
