Over at Shiloh, on the Hill Top in Durham things seem to be on the surface running as smoothly as usual, but to the observer who has watched the progress of affairs there is an under current of uneasiness as is shown by the frequent desertions. People in Durham and Lisbon Falls are ready and willing to lend a hand in helping any to get away who are tired of the life there. A peculiar vocabulary has come into vogue on phase of which will serve as an illustration. Two men met recently when others were present and one said to the other, “I want to see you on (naming day).” “What for?” “Oh, I’ve got a market for another pig.” Which meant he wanted help in the underground railway.

50 years ago, 1957

• More than $21 million was collected in gasoline taxes in Maine during the fiscal year ending June 30, the Maine petroleum industry has reported. The exact figure was $21,325,200.72, an increase of $1,055,334, or just under 5%, over the previous year. The petroleum industry in the state set a new record total taxable gasoline sales of more than 300 million gallons.

• A dreary drizzle settled over the Twin City area yesterday but not enough rain came down to give much aid to parched lawns and gardens. The UWP Co. gatehouse measured a total of 0.17 inches during the slight rainfall which began yesterday morning and ended in late afternoon.

Call them catalysts. Call them leaders. They are men like Reggie Jackson, Cecil Cooper, Fernando Valenzuela, Lonnie Smith.

They come in all ages – like rookie Willie McGee and veteran Phil Niekro. They come in all sizes – like Gorman Thomas and Manny Trillo.

They are the men in the pennant races.

As the 1982 baseball season nears its final month, and the chase for division flags becomes more heated, keep a close eye on these men. They mold the fate of their teams.
