• The word comes from the upper part of the town of Bowdoin that some strange animal which is believed to be a catamount is prowling about that town, making the night hideous with his noises – and that peculiar tracks have been seen which old hunters say are those of a wildcat.

• Many strangers who come to Lewiston remark about the absence of a checking room at either of the railroad stations. In almost all other cities of any size an opportunity is given to have parcels and clothing checked at the stations. As it is now, if a man gets into Lewiston and has an hour or so to wait around, he is obliged to carry his luggage with him.

50 years ago, 1957

• More than 14,000 students are expected to trot off to the books and blackboards in Lewiston-Auburn public and parochial schools when they open next week. School officials report they expect 14,073 in the classrooms, an increase of 159 over last year’s figure of 13,914.

• The dedication of the new $525,000 St. Joseph’s parochial school on Main Street, Lewiston, will be the outstanding ceremony of the observance of the 100th anniversary of the founding of St. Joseph’s Parish. The new school, which is expected to be occupied by the middle of November, has an estimated maximum student population of 640 children, and its dedication will be a feature of the parish’s planned anniversary celebration.

25 years ago, 1982

• School enrollments are expected to drop for the second straight year in Lewiston, with an estimated 5,750 students walking through the doors of the city’s schools.

• Auburn anticipates an enrollment of about 4,700 when schools open their doors in September, and that figure represents a decline of about 140 students from last year.

• For the 1982-83 school year, about 340 students are expected to attend St. Dominic Regional High School, where increased costs there have increased tuition by $80 this year. The 340 students expected to enroll is an increase of 10 over final enrollment figures last year.
