MOUNT JEFFERSON, N.H. (AP) – A hiker from New York state is being treated for head injuries after falling on New Hampshire’s Mt. Jefferson and being flown off the mountain Tuesday morning by helicopter.

Fish and Game said Dr. Quentas Chess of Mamaroneck fell Monday afternoon, fracturing the bone around an eye and possibly injuring his eye and neck.

Fish and Game Sgt. Chip Joseph said Chess and his brother, Cyrus Chess, also a doctor, were hiking with two of their children when Quintas tripped and fell forward, landing on his face.

Rather than attempt to move the injured man over rough terrain in the dark, Joseph said Cyrus Chess stablized his brother, pitched a tent and cared for him during the night.

Rescuers reached him Tuesday morning and called for an Army National Guard helicopter.

The chopper landed near where the party made camp, plucked Chess off the mountain and flew him to Concord, where an ambulance took him to Concord Hospital.
