PORTLAND – Noel E. Stahl, 67, passed away in the early-morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Berlin on Jan. 11, 1940, the only child of Simon J. and Loretta (Noel) Stahl. He attended local schools, and was a 1958 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School.

He went on to attend St. Anselm College in Manchester and was also a boy’s camp counselor during the summer months.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1962, and served for more than 24 years before retiring in 1985. During his military career, he was stationed in Hawaii and earned a number of decorations.

He was an avid scuba diver; teaching scuba diving courses as well as safety courses through the Red Cross. He was also a strong supporter of the Red Cross blood drives, contributing continuously throughout his lifetime.

He was a member of the Gorham American Legion Post 82, and had lived in Gorham for more than 21 years since retiring from the military.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Stahl of Gorham; as well as by his sons, David Byrne, and his wife, Tammy, of Rome, N.Y., and Shawn Byrne of Roy, Utah; his daughters, Debra Beaver of Tucson, Ariz., and Roberta Simonsen of Bountiful, Utah; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents.
