Beekeepers meet
RUMFORD – The Western Maine Beekeepers Association will present a slide show and talk by state apiarist Tony Jadczak on getting hives ready for winter. The presentation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Mountain Valley High School’s room 302. The class will cover the latest treatments for mites and tips and techniques for getting hives through the winter.

Community walk
PORTLAND – The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will hold the Portland 5K Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Back Cove.
Proceeds will benefit local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs. Registration will be held at the site at 9 a.m. The noncompetitive walk will begin at 10 a.m.

Pro-life awards
AUGUSTA – The Pro-Life Education Association annual awards brunch will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Senator. Registration will begin at 9:15 a.m.
Featured speaker will be award-winning author and pro-life advocate Barbara Curtis, the mother of 12 children and writer of newspaper columns and a book, “Reaching the Left from the Right: Talking About Social Issues with People Who Don’t Think Like You.”
The association honor the following for their pro-life efforts: Charla Bansley, state director of the Concerned Women of America; the Rev. Robert Emrich, founder of the Maine Jeremiah Project; and Dale Voisine, immediate past state deputy of the Knights of Columbus.
The brunch is open to the public. Reservations are required and can be obtained by writing to Patricia Truman, 85 Second St., Hallowell, ME 04347, and enclosing a check payable to PLEA for $15. Volunteers needed
PORTLAND – The Brain Injury Association of Maine is looking for volunteers who would be interested in helping plan the 2008 Walk for Thought. There are six walk sites: Kennebunk/Springvale, Greater Portland, Lewiston, Waterville/Augusta, Brewer/Bangor and Presque Isle. More than 1,000 walkers are expected to participate statewide in the Walk for Thought on March 22, 2008.
The Brain Injury Association of Maine provides resource information, education and support to those affected by brain injury. It also offers brain injury prevention workshops for professionals and children while supplying properly fitted helmets to school age children.
