GREENE – Filmmaker and photographer Tom Sterling will narrate his film, “The Boreal,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, and 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial, 371, Sawyer Road.
The two-part film was shot at the Isle Royale National Park in northern Michigan and captures the wildlife native to that area. The second part highlights the filming of an albino moose in Ontario.
Sterling was born in Jackson, Mich., and lives in Twin Lakes, Wis. His boyhood years were filled with an association with nature. His fascination for the natural world, and travel, began to manifest itself in two ways – art work and the camera.
Early on, Sterling discovered an ability to draw and soon began to try to “capture” many wild creatures on canvas. When he came of the age where he was able to own a car, he found that he had money enough for a car or a motion picture camera but not both. He chose the camera.
Following high school, Sterling joined the Air Force. The military provided the transportation while he traveled and recorded a variety of wild places all over North America.
Leaving the service, Sterling enrolled at Jackson Community College in Jackson, Mich., and later transferred to the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources. Graduating with a bachelor of science degree in natural history, he began making educational films, films for television series and films for the travel lecture circuit.
In 1980, Sterling received Program Magazine’s “Rising Star” award. Since 1972, he has done more than 4,000 performances and finds the live performance to be the most exciting way to bring the fascination of the world to everyone.
Program admission is free, and the doors will open one hour before the shows. Approximate duration is 80 minutes. For more information, call 946-5311 or visit http://ourworld.cs.com/sawyer foundation.
