LIVERMORE FALLS – Vandalism in town seems to be caused by young people 17 and over, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said.

People over 17 years old are not covered by the town’s curfew ordinance.

Police have been investigating incidents of vandalism that include breaking windows, smashing an angel statue at Union Park, and most recently, wrecking a mail box at the American Legion Hall on Reynolds Avenue for the second time.

Residents raised concerns over vandalism at the last selectmen’s meeting and questioned whether the curfew is being enforced.

Steward said his officers are enforcing the curfew law.

The problem appears to stem from an older group of teenagers, he said.

The curfew ordinance sets out times when a young person can be out and about walking around town unaccompanied by an adult. They also may have a valid reason for walking around town, he said, such as returning home from an evening school event. In that case they could be excused from a curfew violation.

A group of girls walking downtown stopped Steward on an evening last week and asked him what the curfew is in town, he said.

Children ages 11 and under must be off the streets between 9:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., Steward said, with the time extended an hour on Fridays and Saturdays.

Children who are 12 or 13 years old need to be off the streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., again with it extended an hour on Fridays and Saturdays.

Teenagers 14 to 17 years old have a curfew between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., with the extension of an hour Fridays and Saturdays.
