Dear Sun Spots: I enjoy reading your column every day, without fail. I have written to you several times and have been answered. This time I have another question for you. How does one get in touch with the mayor, Larry Gilbert? I know he has meetings with the citizens of Lewiston, but I would like to speak to him in person and promise it won’t take long. I can be reached via phone at 782-1602. Thank you. – No Name, Lewiston.
Answer: Have you tried contacting him through his Web site, www.larrygilbertmayor.com?
You should note that Gilbert’s talk show, “Chats with the Mayor” airs every Thursday at 3 a.m., 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the L/A Community Channel 11, Time Warner and L/A Community Channel 2, Oxford Networks. Gilbert also pens a weekly column, Mayor’s Corner, in the Twin City Times.
In the meantime, Sun Spots is not sure if you’re aware of the coffee talks hosted by the mayor at various coffee shops here in Lewiston. It is open to all citizens. Typically Gilbert is available to Lewiston residents for about a two-hour block, and can meet for one-on-one conversations. He looks forward to hearing what’s on the minds of community residents and Sun Spots is sure you can share your thoughts with him. You might also consider writing to him via e-mail at [email protected] or to P.O. Box 1515, Lewiston, ME 04241.
Dear Sun Spots: Thank you for such a nice write-up (Aug. 20)! I thought you and Sun Spots column readers might like to know “the latest.”
We will debut the new show (MaineWatch) on Sept. 14 at 8:30 p.m., right after Washington Week. Thanks again. – Jennifer Rooks, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: A few months ago I read a story about a new state law that was passed regarding health insurance coverage for dependent children through the age of 25, even if they were no longer in college. Could you find out if and when this went into effect and if it includes employer groups with an out of state policy? Thanks. – N.A., Jay.
Answer: Sun Spots believes you are referring to LD 841 passed during the 123rd Legislature’s first session, which extends health insurance coverage for dependent children up to age 25. According to the state’s Web site, LD 841 (HP 640), sponsored by Rep. Christopher Barstow of Gorham, passed 123-21, with six absent, became law May 14, 2007.
Dear Sun Spots: This is in response To No Name, Lewiston seeking children’s books in French:
I have two children at L’Ecole Francaise du Maine in South Freeport as well as teach English there. The school sends home Scholastic book order forms every few weeks with the students so that the families may order French books for their home. If you are looking to purchase books, I am sure if you contacted the school they could assist you. The number is 865-3308. – Stephanie Michaud, Wales.
Dear Sun Spots: How necessary is www preceding an e-address? It seems to work without it, but I wonder if am missing information this way. Thanks. – Marlene, North Jay.
Answer: It does work without it, most of the time. However, not everyone is familiar with the ins and outs of searching online and the www is meant to help them locate the exact article or site they were seeking. It also ensures there’s a break between the Web site address and the text following it.
