NEW YORK (AP) – Four people were killed early Saturday morning in a horrific crash after their speeding SUV smashed into a utility pole, flipped upside down and skidded wildly down a Bronx street, police said.
The driver, Maymond Baba, 31, of Manhattan, his passenger Luis Matias, 30, of the Bronx, a 26-year-old woman and another male passenger died after the 4 a.m. wreck on East Tremont Avenue, which peeled back the vehicle’s roof and left shredded chunks of red metal scattered along the roadway, police said.
The identity of the other two victims was not immediately released pending notification of their families. The screech of steel as the SUV scraped along the street roused neighbors as police and medical personnel rushed to the scene.
“They were going at least 70 mph,” witness Melissa Alier told the Daily News. “We heard a big bang. When we looked up, there was a car flipping over.”
The vehicle, turned upside down, came to rest against a second light pole after hitting the first pole at East Tremont and Commonwealth avenues.
