Why has there been no time yet made for a public hearing in consideration of a 30-year contract with the city of Lewiston and Casella Waste Management? The residents of Lewiston need much more information. The council wants to put the deal to referendum to be voted on in November. It should not be rushed. The people cannot vote wisely without having more information.

Lewiston City Administrator James Bennett has said, “At the end of the day, it’s a council decision and a community decision.” Also, at the council meeting of Aug. 14, Mark Paradis said that the public would have 14 public meetings.

We, as citizens, have not yet been given a chance to make any decisions. Instead, meetings are held without our knowledge. I know that my decision is not to allow toxins to enter our soil, water and air and ultimately our bodies at the rate it would happen if Casella is allowed in Lewiston.

I feel disappointed and let down by an administrator and city council, elected by the people, to help the people.

Nancy Reynolds, Lewiston

Editor’s Note: A public meeting on the Casella proposal is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St., Lewiston.
