SOUTH PARIS – Rose M. Smith passed away Monday, Sept. 3, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, with her beloved niece/goddaughter, Rose M. DePerte and grandniece, Alana M. DePerte at her side.

She was born in Barrington, N.H., July 14, 1917, a daughter of Alcide and Delia Lemelin Dubois. She was a graduate of Brunswick High School, Class of 1935, and later became a registered nurse at the Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston.

It was at that time as a nurse that she met the love of her life, Norman W. Smith of Oxford, who was a patient in the hospital. Sometime later, before he was sent overseas to the war, she joined him in Mississippi and they married March 9, 1942. Returning to Maine while he was serving his country, she continued her nursing career and touched many lives with her kindness and dedication.

Years later they lived in Derry and Nashua, N.H., before returning to Maine and made their home on Patch Mountain Road, Greenwood. Failing health relocated them to downtown Norway.

She was employed at Stephens Memorial Hospital in nursing and later in the Medical Library for several years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting, but her greatest enjoyment was reading and music (Daniel O’Donnell her favorite). She had a great love for animals and birds. She cherished her pets especially her cat, “Freebie.” A delightful personality and an inquiring mind kept her in tune with life when she became homebound due to ill health.

A resident of the Maine Veterans Home since July 2006, she will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her niece/goddaughter, Rose M. DePerte of Norway; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Betty Smith of Norway; brother-in-law, Lloyd D. Herrick of Norway; sisters-in-law, Bea Dubois of Brunswick and Lora Dubois of Merrimack, N.H.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Norman; her parents; brothers, Arthur “Spud” Dubois, Elmer “Johnny” Dubois of Brunswick and Wilfred “Wink” Dubois of Merrimack, N.H.; a sister, Lena Yakubowski; a grandnephew, Arthur “Chip” Dubois Jr. of Brunswick; and sisters-in-law, Adrienne Dubois of Brunswick, Gloria Herrick of Norway, Iva Martinson of Sanford and Vera Robbins of Bryant Pond.
