FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Karl R. Toner Jr. of Coral Springs, Fla., and Norway, died Aug. 31, at Florida Medical Center.
He was born in Lewiston, March 22, 1923, the son of Karl R. and Elizabeth (Plummer) Toner. He attended local schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1940. He entered Bates College with the Class of 1944, but due to military service did not receive his bachelor’s degree until 1948.
He was employed in the advertising department of the Dennison Manufacturing Co. in Framingham, Mass., from 1949 until October 1951, when he joined Dickie-Raymond Inc. a Boston/New York direct advertising agency as a copywriter.
In 1954, he became an account executive and in 1967 was elected a vice president of client services. At the time of his retirement in 1988, he was plant manager of Ultimate Engineering, Inc. in Natick, Mass.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, and went through flight training and was a naval aviator and flight instructor at war’s end. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and following helicopter training was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet.
He returned to civilian life in December 1953, but remained active in the Naval Air Reserve until retiring with the rank of commander. His last assignment, prior to retirement, was as commanding officer of an anti-submarine helicopter squadron out of the South Weymouth Naval Air Station.
He resided in Framingham and Ashland, Mass., for 40 years. He was a member of Plymouth Church in Framingham, where he served as deacon and trustee. After his retirement in 1988, he spent his summers at the family residence on Lake Penaseewasee in Norway and since 1986 has wintered in Deerfield Beach and Coral Springs, Fla.
He is survived by son, Karl III, his wife, Marion and daughter, Samantha, of Coral Springs, Fla.; daughter, Allison of Ocala, Fla.; son, Curtis, and wife, Bibi, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Albert; a niece, Ann Frey and daughter, Heather; and a nephew, Karl A. Toner and family.
