The recent dedication at the Veterans Memorial Park of the “Remember the Maine” monument and the 12th named stone honoring fallen and living veterans, was a moving experience. Thanks should be given to those in attendance, including the mayors of both Lewiston and Auburn, whose eloquent words paid proud tribute.

When people attend such ceremonies they not only honor fallen soldiers or those missing in action, they also honor the surviving veterans of past and present conflicts, as well as peacetime obligations. Honoring our military is one of the few acts that both hold us together and define us as Americans. Our military has had a lengthy and proud history, and the continuing support of a strong armed force will allow us to lead our lives in peace and for our country to maintain its role as the leading voice of freedom in our often chaotic world.

Although Lewiston and Auburn, along with the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council, should be commended in their support of this beautiful park, a special note of thanks should go to Gerry N. Cain, treasurer of this council.

Countless hours have been spent working with people who were interested in having the names of their loved ones or friends who have served in the military placed on these monuments. She has diligently maintained records of these names and the contributions involved. These efforts have been instrumental in helping to make this park a showplace for all Mainers to honor our veterans.
