After reading some recent letters by GOP and President Bush supporters, I think these people have been drinking neocon Kool-Aid and know the talking points.
I don’t hate President Bush. I don’t even know him, nor do many of his critics. He has committed impeachable offenses, one being violations of the Geneva Convention. A treaty once ratified by the U.S. Senate and signed by the executive branch is the law of the land. Bush seems to think that this treaty (and other treaties) are quaint relics of a bygone time, yet they are still the law of the land. Changes to a treaty need to taken up in the Senate; the president cannot simply ignore the treaty. Bush has committed other impeachable offenses as well.
GOP supporters are ecstatic that a Democrat-controlled Congress cannot get much done and has low ratings. The problem, of course, is the 30-plus Blue Dog Democrats (mostly from the southern states) who support Bush and the war in Iraq. I believe Maine’s own Rep. Mike Michaud is a Blue Dog.
He might just as well be a Republican.
We all want fiscal responsibility and a strong defense, but the spending on Iraq and Afghanistan is not fiscally responsible, nor are these wars helping our country’s defense.
If people wonder why the Democrats cannot end the war and the flood of money into unnecessary defense projects, look no further than Rep. Michaud and his Blue Dog buddies.
