RUMFORD – Jane Bickford Grover passed away July 29 in Rumford.
She was born in Lewiston on June 10, 1915, the daughter of Ross L. and Callie (Barron) Bickford. She was predeceased by her siblings, Olive Bickford, Edith Holmes and Donald Bickford.
At a young age she moved with her family to Rockland, Mass., and then to Bridgewater, Mass. After graduation from Bridgewater High School, she married Robert L. Grover of Halifax, Mass. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 29. He survives her.
For many years they operated a successful dairy farm, Grovers Golden Gallons, in Bethel. In 1966 she and her husband joined the International Volunteer Service organization and were sent to Laos. She worked with Laotian women in villages and towns as a teaching home economist. Two years of service in Laos were subsequently followed by tours in Africa and India, where she again taught home economics.
Following her years of volunteer work she pursued her artistic abilities and became proficient in stained glass, spinning, weaving, print making and bird carving. She taught many of these skills through adult education programs and also to schoolchildren.
