OLD ORCHARD BEACH – The Livermore Falls Andies spent a balmy evening at the coast guzzling cold water and body surfing past the self-destructive Old Orchard Beach Seagulls at Regina Field.
The Seagulls made several costly mistakes and were reprimanded by the Andies with a 28-6 victory Friday evening.
“We have only 16 upperclassmen. It is a testament to our strength and conditioning,” said Livermore Falls coach Brad Bishop. “That’s a big physical team.”
But when the Seagulls got something going, turnovers and penalties kept Old Orchard from getting on the board.
“You can’t make the mistakes we made as often as we made them,” said Old Orchard coach Dean Plante, whose team came undone with a dozen penalties for 85 yards. “They (Andies) are a scrapy, physical team. We would get something going, then a couple of penalties and we were forced to throw.”
The Andies pounced on the Seagulls when they fumbled on their first possession. Matt Lord scooped up the loose ball at the 40. Livermore Falls slugged it out to the 1, where Kyle Stebbins wormed his way into the end zone for his first of two touchdowns to put the Andies ahead, 6-0.
“My blocking was great, opened up holes all evening,” said Stebbins, who carried the ball 23 times for for 160 yards. “I couldn’t have run all evening without my blocking.”
In the second quarter, the Andies, who piled up 254 yards rushing, did what they do best, plod along with a crushing ground game.
The Andies got the ball on their 14 and marched forward thanks to a pair of 16- and 18-yard rushes by Stebbins, a 20-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Gats to Chandler White and a 9-yard keeper from Gats to place Livermore Falls at the 6. Gats then dropped back to pass and connected with Nate Michaud for a touchdown. Gats ran in the conversion, and the Andies were ahead 14-0 going into the second half.
Livermore Falls didn’t waste anytime getting on the board in the third quarter, either. The Andies started their drive from the 36 and battled their way to the 8-yard line on a 16-yard rush by Jesse Ciarcia and a 36-yard dash from Stebbins, who took it from there and scored his second touchdown. The pass failed, but Livermore Falls was in command, 20-0.
The Seagulls finally put six points on the board on the next possession when Zack Chase scored from the 12 after a long drive from Old Orchard’s 20.
But Livermore Falls had already done too much damage, and the Andies were not done yet. Michaud latched on to a 13-yard pass from Gats and scored his second touchdown of the evening.
