PARIS – The Maine Veterans’ Home has named Joseph D. Davis as Veteran of the Month.

Davis is a native of Virginia and is a veteran of World War II and the China Burma India Theater. He served in the Army from May 22, 1943, to April 27, 1946.

Davis remembers a great deal of training, basic anti-aircraft and ground observer aircraft warnings. He served with the 10th Air Force in India for 16 months, working in a forward observation post.

His job as a spotter was to keep the battery informed of the positions of any enemy planes, giving range and height, etc. He also operated intermediate speed radio sets. While in India, Davis recalls the great heat and many British and Australian soldiers.

The China Burma India Theater was the name used by the U.S. Army for its forces in those countries during World War II. Some of the well-known units in the theater included the Flying Tigers and Merrill’s Marauders.

For his service, Davis received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.

After his discharge, Davis lived in New York City. One of his favorite hobbies was building radio-controlled model airplanes. His new interest is learning to play the guitar. He resides in the C unit.
