Families may create a muck monster or 3-D art. Or, perhaps do some dancing. Whatever their choice, the Family Arts Festival promises lots of fun.

BRUNSWICK – Families will get a chance to roll up their sleeves and create muck monsters in clay, bird nests from natural fibers, “stained-glass” windows from collage materials, 3-D sculptures or, perhaps, giant murals.

Or, they might opt to join the drumming circle or dance.

They’ll get to do this and more from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Family Arts Festival on the Brunswick Town Mall. The annual event – now in its 11th year – celebrates local creativity, hands-on art fun and a sense of community for six hours under tents.

All workshops are free and give participants full rein to try their hand at learning a new skill.

Music, dance, workshops and demonstrations will continue throughout the day. A full schedule may be found at www.fiveriversartsalliance.org.

Some new events planned this year: Lynette Breton and Wayne Robbins demonstrating woodworking and carving techniques; a performance by Bowdoin College’s a cappella group, the Meddiebempsters; and kids’ balladeer Matt Loosigian and the Gemini Dancers; karate demonstrations; and salsa music by the Primo Cubano Trio.

A series of intergenerational workshops planned on the theme of “Our Town” will take place throughout the day. Starting at 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m., artist Kat Logan will give instructions in plein air watercolor. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. Jane Page Conway will teach how to hand-tint Polaroid photos. At 1 p.m., seasoned artists Patricia Boissevain and Mildred Johnson will help attendees create a page in the “Brunswick Neighborhood Book,” using paint, collage, text, stamps and other materials.

While admission is free, donations are welcome. Rain site is the Brunswick Junior High School gymnasium.
