GRAY – These are the people who put forth the predictions you use to plan your vacations. You scream at them when the weather is nasty, hail them when all is well. This week, the forecasters who make your life miserable or terrific will open their doors to show you how it is done.

For better or for worse.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Gray will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.

The Gray office provides weather forecasts and warnings for northern, central and southeastern New Hampshire and southern and western Maine, including the mid-coast area.

The office has been located at its present site in Gray since September 1994. Prior to that, it was at the Portland Jetport. The move was part of a national program to modernize and restructure the field operations of the National Weather Service.

The open house will include tours of the facility and give the people an opportunity to learn more about the operations of the National Weather Service in Maine and New Hampshire.

Visitors can see some of the latest technology and information available to forecasters, including the state-of-the-art Advanced Weather Information Processing System and the WSR-88D Doppler RADAR.

The National Weather Service facility is in the easternmost corner of the town of Gray, on Route 231, south of Pineland Farms.

The Forecast Office is in a red brick building on Weather Lane on the left side of the road just prior to the Pineland Equestrian Center.
